Alfred Hermann Traeger was the kind of person whose life story is best told as a fireside yarn.
Traeger discovered the meaning of his life when travelling along lonely outback tracks. He loved the smell of gum trees on the banks of meandering bush creeks. He found a strange happiness in giving what he called 'a big surprise' to isolated families in the Never Never who were completely cut off from the rest of the world. He gave them the miracle pedal radio so that they could call the Flying Doctor.
Traeger was a revolutionary. And he didn't know it.
