Michael Lobwein, a shearer from Meringandan, a town near Toowoomba in South-East Queensland - enlisted in 1914 using the surname Levine. It was never recorded why he changed his name but it was assumed that his original name had a German heritage. Mick's three brothers also fought in WW1 as Lobweins.
As a Private, Michael was assigned to the 15th Batallion and landed in Anzac Cove on the 25th April 1915. He had been fighting for a month when he wrote this letter to his sister living in Queensland, and died in action three days later. Hwas 31 years old.
